Proposed Civic Center

In 1971, the Official Program Bedford County 1771 1971 Bicentennial presented some thoughts for the county's future. On page 82 of the Program, under the heading of Ready For A Third Great Century the sketch reproduced below bore the caption:

Official goal of the 1971 Bedford County Bicentennial is creation of a Bedford County Civic Center, to serve the causes of economic stability and growth in the county and to promote internal progress of community activities and cultural events. An architect's rendition of a proposed design for the Civic Center is seen here as provided by the Bedford County Civic Center Authority. The Authority announced that the projected structure would be self-sustaining and self-liquidating from proceeds of events scheduled within it. As planned in 1971, the building would contain a large, divisible auditorium space with dining areas, capable of 5,000 persons, smaller meeting rooms, kitchen and service areas on main floor, and office space for the Center and Authority, along with a parking area large enough for 2,500 vehicles.
