Bedford County's Role In The Wars

Miscellaneous Hotspots   1991-2001

  For a decade, the United States of America assisted, but did not take a lead role in any of the wars that erupted around the world. The conflicts in which the United States provided troops and equipment included the following.

  1991 ~ ----- The U. S. provided advisors to assist the groups rebelling against the Somali Democratic Government beginning in 1991.

  1996 ~ Beginning in 1996, the United States supplied advisors to assist the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Workers' Party in the Iraqi Kurdish Civil War.

  1996 ~ 2006 The United States supported the Hindu Kingdom of Nepal in the Nepalesse Civil War.

  1996 ~ 2000 During the Civil War in Afghanistan, the United Stated allied itself to the Islamic State of Afghanistan against the Taliban and al~Qaeda.

  1998 ~ ----- The United States supported the Yemeni government against al~Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, variously known as Ansar al Sharia in Yemen.

  Bedford County residents who served in the armed forces during this troublesome decade included: Richard G. Powell of Manns Choice, who served in the U. S. Army from 1976 to 1979 and then in the U. S. Navy from 1980 to 1998; Richard Goodman II, who served in the U. S. Air Force as a Colonel from 1993; and Brian K. Pineda, of Schellsburg, who served in the US Air Force from 1993 through 1999. Christopher Lee Lape, of Osterburg, served in the army from 1993 to 1997.
