Building Styles in Bedford County

Early 20th Century Commercial Vernacular

The Early 20th Century Commercial Vernacular style was popular from 1900 to 1940. The very plain and simplified style was chosen for commercial buildings that wanted to appear 'modern.'

Often constructed of brick, the structures built in this style often sported flat roofs with little or no ornamentation at the eaves. The only decorative element might be varying color brick on the upper part of the facade. The overall appearance of a commercial building constructed in the Early 20th Century Commercial Vernacular style is of a large box with windows and doors.

The style is exemplified by the two commercial structures on W. Pitt Street in Bedford Borough.
