Building Styles in Bedford County

Federal

The Federal style was popular from circa 1780 to circa 1820, with the primary identifying features of two and one-half or three-storey construction, usually of brick with a low-pitch gable or flat roof. Smaller windows define the third floor, often beneath a roofline balustrade and embellished cornices. Both gable ends tended to incorporate paired chimneys connected by a level or stepped parapet.

Facades in the Federal style often were five-bay with symmetrical door and window placement, and entryways with classical detailings including elliptical fanlight transoms and sidelights.

The Federal style is exemplified by the Barclay Town House at 133/135 East Penn Street in Bedford Borough and the Schell House at 3721 Pitt Street in Schellsburg Borough.

Buildings constructed in the Federal style were not necessarily large and elaborate. The Federal style is exemplified by the private dwelling at 209 W. Main Street in Everett Borough.
